Gary Dunham is the director of Indiana University Press, where they oversee its publishing mission for scholarly and trade books and journals. Their current areas of expertise are digital publishing and book acquisitions/editing. In regards to the former, Gary was co-P.I for the online version of the Lewis and Clark journals and current P.I. of the Mellon Humanities Open Book program where they have digitized over 150 IUP books and made them open access. In regards to the latter, they have acquired and edited in their career around 1000 books.

Gary grew up on a farm in western Maine and was the first person in their family to go to college. They earned an A.B. from Bowdoin College and M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in archaeology/anthropology from the University of Virginia. They have worked in scholarly publishing since 1995 and previously directed the University of Nebraska Press, SUNY Press, and the publications program of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association.

Gary says, "I love publishing, because the dissemination of research in book and journal forms is an essential part of the knowledge ecosystem of higher education."
